To help everyone get home safely, visitors are urged to follow six simple tips:
- Always wear the right life jacket
- Always swim in the designated swimming areas
- Always keep an eye on your kids
- Always look out for hidden hazards
- Always keep a safe distance and speed when on the water
- Always check the weather and lake conditions before you leave home
Seqwater Executive General Manager Operations, Fiore Zulli, said Seqwater is expecting bumper crowds this long weekend and is encouraging visitors to keep the fun alive.
“Long weekends are some of the busiest times at our lakes and recreation sites, and we want everyone to make the most of it safely,” said Mr Zulli.
“Whether you’re boating, paddling or swimming in the designated areas, a few simple precautions will help ensure a fun and incident free weekend for all,” he said.
“Seqwater rangers have worked tirelessly over the holiday period patrolling our lakes and recreation sites, although they can’t be everywhere at once, so be safe – for fun’s sake.
“Rain and storms can change conditions very quickly on the lakes. Check the weather before heading out, make sure you have the right safety equipment, and follow the rules at each site for a safe and enjoyable experience,” said Mr Zulli.
Queensland Police Service Water Police Acting Inspector Gordon Thiry said officers will be out to ensure everyone stays safe on the water this Australia Day long weekend.
“Alcohol and boating don’t mix – it’s simple as that. Operating a watercraft under the influence is illegal and puts lives at risk,” Acting Inspector Thiry said.
“With busier waterways expected, it’s also important to stick to speed limits, keep a proper lookout, and allow extra time for travel to ensure everyone gets home safely.”
From boating and fishing to picnics and scenic walks, Seqwater has something on offer for everyone this summer.
