The free event, transforms South Bank Parklands and Queensland Museum into a science playground, offering dozens of free family-friendly activities.

Representatives from South East Queensland’s bulk water authority, Seqwater will be taking part in the festival with a free water refill station and interactive displays, including a virtual realty sandpit.

Seqwater Chief Executive Officer, Neil Brennan said the sandpit used 120kg of sand and kinetic sensors to simulate hills, valleys, lakes and rainfall to give people a hands-on lesson on how the region’s water supply was managed.

“Seqwater has increased our education efforts to grow community understanding of the water cycle, how water is sourced, stored, treated and supplied,” Mr Brennan said.

“When it comes to delivering a sustainable water future for all, our community’s values, attitudes and understanding of water supply have a big impact.”

The festival coincides with World Water Day (22 March) – an annual UN observance day that highlights the importance of safe drinking water for all.

Mr Brennan said the theme for this year’s World Water Day was ‘Leaving no one behind’ which referred to ensuring the availability of water and its sustainable management and sanitation for all.

“The day is a good time to reflect on the tremendous strides governments, industries and communities have taken to manage the region’s water supply and plan for the future,” Mr Brennan said.

“Since the Millennium Drought, Seqwater has sought to better understand how people value water and their views on water security planning and potential supply options.

“For us, every day is World Water Day and we need to continuously work in partnership with the community to create a shared vision for the region’s water future.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating World Water Day at the World Science Festival in 2019 and connecting with the community to share our vision for the future of water in South East Queensland.”

The World Science Festival Brisbane 2019 is proudly presented by the Queensland Museum from 20 – 24 March. The Cultural Forecourt at South Bank Parklands will transform into a science playground with dozens of free immersive and family-friendly events for everyone to enjoy.
