Outdoor enthusiasts looking to visit South East Queensland’s lakes during the Easter long weekend are being reminded to Play it safe and be aware of any temporary closures to recreation following recent rain and a COVID-19 outbreak.

Lakes and parks managed by Seqwater, including Enoggera Reservoir, Lake Moogerah and Lake Somerset are typically very popular this time of year, with thousands of people flocking to the recreation sites to enjoy the Easter long weekend.

However, Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Neil Brennan said circumstances this year had resulted in a number of restrictions and closures in the interest of public safety.

Mr Brennan advised people planning to visit one of Seqwater’s lakes or parks to first make sure they were up-to-date with any changes to recreational access and the latest COVID-19 travel restrictions.

“Before heading out to one of our lakes or parks, we encourage people to check the Seqwater website for the latest recreation and safety notices, which we also display on our social media channels and the free Seqwater app,” Mr Brennan said.

“While most of our recreation areas have re-opened following recent rain and COVID-19 outbreak, there are still some closures in place. Unfortunately, Lake Moogerah is still closed to some activities due to water quality results exceeding public health guidelines following the recent rain event.

“It’s important that people check the latest advice from the Queensland Government regarding COVID-19 before heading out and abide by Queensland Health guidelines when visiting our sites.”

Mr Brennan said, as always, any visitors to Seqwater’s lakes and parks should be aware of and adhere to the rules and take responsibility for their safety and the safety of those around them.

“Lakes can appear safe and peaceful but still water can still be dangerous. We want all our visitors to play it safe while they enjoy their time at our sites so they return home safely,” Mr Brennan said.

“We especially ask people to wear lifejackets when out on the water and keep an eye out for submerged hazards.

“It’s also important to remember that trail conditions may have changed as a result of the recent  rainfall.”

Queensland Health’s advice regarding COVID-19.

•    Stay 1.5 metres away from other people—think two big steps
•    Wash your hands with soap and water, or hand sanitiser
