Investigations are underway for proposed upgrades to the Lowood, Esk and Kilcoy Water Treatment Plants, with locals encouraged to attend upcoming information sessions at community markets.

Seqwater Executive General Manager Infrastructure Planning and Capital Delivery, Sarah Dixon said Seqwater is committed to ensuring long-term water security for South East Queensland (SEQ) communities.

“As part of our long-term Water Security Investment Program, we continually assess future demand, population growth, climate and infrastructure performance to identify where investment is needed to support future water needs,” Ms Dixon said.

In Lowood, planning is underway to identify the best option to enhance reliable water supply for a region expected to experience significant growth over the next decade. The preferred option, subject to further assessment and approvals, includes upgrading the treatment processes at the existing water treatment plant to improve capacity.

In Kilcoy, upgrades are proposed to increase the town’s water treatment plant capacity and improve sludge management systems.

Meanwhile, in Esk, Seqwater is investigating replacing the existing water treatment plant with a modern facility, that pending approvals, would increase capacity and provide greater reliability for Esk and Toogoolawah.

Seqwater is also upgrading Somerset and Wivenhoe dams as part of its Dam Improvement Program. Early works are underway at Somerset Dam as the project team finalise the Detailed Business Case for the major upgrade, and the Wivenhoe Dam Improvement Project is progressing through a robust Options Analysis phase.

Ms Dixon said these projects would help ensure residents have access to safe and reliable drinking water for generations to come.

“The various stages of each project are progressing, and we are continuing to assess technical, environmental, financial and community considerations as part of this process,” she said.

“Community feedback is an important part of this work, and we encourage you to come along to one of the upcoming market sessions to meet our project team and ask any questions you may have.”

The first market session is at the Esk Country Market on 12 September.
