Lake Moogerah water levels continue to decline

Seqwater is undertaking weekly assessments at Lake Moogerah to monitor safety risks as water levels continue to decline.

Seqwater is encouraging boat users to be extra vigilant when unloading and operating their vessels at Lake Moogerah.

Seqwater is continuing to monitor water levels at Lake Moogerah, which has dropped to 12.5 per cent capacity.

Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Neil Brennan said weekly assessments were being undertaken to monitor safety risks associated with powered boating on the lake.

“Declining water levels can expose previously submerged hazards and make unloading trailered vessels and boating in general more difficult and dangerous,” Mr Brennan said.

“In the absence of sufficient rainfall, Seqwater may need to close the boat ramp before Easter and school holidays.

“We understand the importance of on-water recreation to the local community however safety must be our first priority.”

If Seqwater is required to close its boat ramp it will mean public boating, jet skiing and water skiing will not be permitted until lake levels increase. However, visitors will still be able to launch paddlecraft and fish from the shore of the lake.

“We strongly encourage boat users to be extra vigilant when unloading and operating their vessels, and to consider whether their vehicle is suitable before attempting to unload at the boat ramp,” Mr Brennan said.

Boats cannot be launched from the bank as this activity damages the foreshore around the edge of the lake and is a safety hazard as vehicles can easily get bogged.

Visitors can enjoy boating and skiing at Lake Maroon, which is approximately 30-minutes north west of Lake Moogerah. Lake Maroon is currently above 50 per cent capacity.
