Since the event was established by the Gold Coast Catchment Association in 2013, more than 67,500 native trees have been planted in various locations across Gold Coast from the Robina City Parklands to alongside the Coomera River.

This year, the association has partnered with Seqwater to co-host the environmental event at the Numinbah Valley Nurture Refuge Offset – a 400-hectare parcel of land within the Hinze Dam catchment.

Seqwater Field Ranger Mitchell Thomas-Carr said the environmental offset had been established by Seqwater to counterbalance the impact of vegetation becoming inundated as a result of the $395 million Hinze Dam Stage Three upgrade in 2011.

Mr Thomas-Carr said the unique parcel of land was important as it provided a vital corridor between the Springbrook and Lamington National Parks, providing connectivity for local flora and fauna.

“The offset is home to an incredible variety of wildlife including rare and threatened animals such as the Coxen’s fig parrot, Spotted-tail quoll and the Richmond birdwing butterfly,” Mr Thomas-Carr said.

“To date, countless hours have been spent replanting trees and shrubs, reducing weed growth and transforming degraded farm sites and riparian zones into functioning ecosystems.

“It’s great to have the support of the Gold Coast Catchment Association and the wider community in helping improve this offset site.”

Gold Coast Catchment Association Executive Officer Rosalinde Brinkman, said the event was a great occasion for people to have fun, connect with nature and walk away with the skills and knowledge required to inspire involvement in local environmental initiatives.   
 

“The growth of urban population and the expansion of urban areas puts increased pressure on our natural areas so it’s important to encourage people to be more actively involved in the restoration, rehabilitation and maintenance of these natural areas.

“Tree planting events such make a real difference in restoring natural habitats, particularly this year as we add to the linkage between several national parks.”

In addition to the tree planting, the free event also features live music with local musicians, food trucks, wildlife shows, indigenous workshops, native plant sales and much more.
