This central earth core and rockfill structure, situated on Burnett Creek approximately 25km above its confluence with the Logan River, permitted expansion of irrigation along Burnett Creek and the Logan River for about 130km downstream of the dam.  This more than doubled the existing area being irrigated to construction of the dam.  Recreation facilities also make the area around the dam a popular tourist attraction.
