A splash of colour at the Green Hill Reservoirs

The concrete walls of the Green Hill Reservoirs were transformed into a work of art, as part of Seqwater’s first community artwork project.

Seqwater teamed up with year 7 art students from nearby Indooroopilly State High School and Street Art Murals Australia (SAMA) to create design concepts based on three themes – Water for life, Nature around us and Urban habitat.

The design concepts were put out to a community vote with more than 50% in favour of the Water for life concept.

The Water for life artwork incorporates local wildlife amongst trees and natural water systems, with hints of the water reservoir itself. The colour palette features an array of natural blues, greens, vibrant yellows and reds.

Painting of the Water for life community artwork was completed in June 2017.

The aim of the Green Hill Reservoirs community artwork project was to reduce problem graffiti and get the community involved in creating a brighter and more welcoming space.

About the Green Hill Reservoirs

The Green Hill Reservoirs, just off Russell Terrace in Chapel Hill, are an important part of the SEQ Water Grid supplying bulk drinking water to parts of Brisbane and the Moreton Bay region.

Reservoir 1, built in 1968, is located at the southern end of the grounds and has a capacity of 76.1 megalitres (ML). Reservoir 2, built in 1984, is located at the northern end and can hold 76.4ML.

The area around the reservoirs is open to the public for recreation and while we want the community to continue to enjoy the area, unfortunately there has been an increase in vandalism at the site.

Throughout Queensland, artwork has been used in built environments to create safer places for the community to enjoy.

About the community artwork project

Green Hill Reservoirs community artwork

Seqwater is painting a mural on the concrete walls of two of our largest bulk water supply reservoirs.

To help design a more beautiful space for the community to enjoy, Year 7 art extension students (Arts XLR8) from Indooroopilly State High School worked with street artists from Street Art Murals Australia (SAMA) to create design concepts based on three themes - Water for life, Nature around us and Urban habitat.

We put the three artwork designs out to a community vote, with 50.6% in favour of the Water for life concept.

During June, residents and visitors will see plenty of activitiy on site as our street artists create the Water for life masterpiece.

Once the mural painting is finished, Seqwater will host a community launch event to celebrate its completion.

Keep an eye on the photo library or follow us on Facebook for progress updates.
